(WWJ) - A Jackson County man accused of kidnapping and raping several women he met through dating websites could find out Tuesday if he'll stand trial.
Michigan State Police say William Akin faces 12 felony charges and one misdemeanor charge in connection with attacks on at least six victims. The most serious charges, first-degree criminal sexual conduct and kidnapping, carry penalties up to life in prison.
Akin is due in court for a preliminary examination at 10 a.m.
Prosecutors allege that Akin approached his victims online using "Plenty of Fish," "Tagged," and similar apps and websites. He is believed to have used his full name on these sites as well as the pseudonyms "Will" and "Will Smith."
After Akin's arrest in June, he was charged with one count of first-degree criminal sexual conduct, one count of second-degree criminal sexual conduct, one count of malicious use of telecommunications services and two counts of unlawful imprisonment. Charges were amended after more apparent victims were identified.
Investigators believe additional victims who met Akin on dating websites have yet to come forward. Anyone who may have have had contact with him online is asked to call the Detective Bureau of the Michigan State Police Jackson Post at 517-780-4580.
