DETROIT (WWJ) - A suspected car thief is in custody after an attempted police stop led to a foot chase in the middle of the night.
It all started when police attempted to stop a driver on Detroit's northwest side around 1:15 a.m. Friday. The suspect failed to stop, but troopers did not initiate a chase.
A short time later, troopers spotted the vehicle, which was reported stolen, running in the front yard of a home near Robson and Ellis, not far from Hubbell and Joy. The car was empty, but troopers could hear dogs barking and the sounds of sticks breaking nearby. When troopers went between two houses to investigate the noises, the suspect shined a red laser at them and then took off running.
Troopers were able to catch up to the suspect, but he continued to resist arrest. He was finally taken into custody after troopers utilized pepper spray. A Glock 22 pistol with a laser sight was also recovered.
The suspect was lodged at the Detroit Detention Center and is now facing multiple charges, including fleeing and eluding, resist/obstruct, possession of a stolen vehicle, felon in possession of a firearm and felonious assault.
The incident remains under investigation.
