(WWJ) A search for a 20-year-old Lansing man is ongoing Monday, near South Haven on Lake Michigan.
A friend reported the man missing at North Beach Sunday night, after South Haven Area Emergency Services says the swimmer disappeared while fighting against rough conditions.
Red flags were flying, and there was a rip current warning with waves of five to six feet at the time the man went missing.
"These are the type of days where drownings occur," the National Weather Service warned on Sunday. "When in doubt don't go out! Stay dry when waves are high! Steer clear of the pier!"
Coast Guard St. Joseph Executive Petty Officer Matthew Binns told WWJ's Beth Fisher one man swept off a pier last night was rescued when someone threw him a life ring.
"Another person was in the water from the beach, and that is the person we are currently working for," he said.
Binns said multiple Coast Guard agencies are involved in the search with a few dozen small boats, as well as helicopters.
The name of the missing man was not immediately released.
