DETROIT (WWJ) - The city of Detroit has handed down a major fine related to a spill into the Detroit River.
City officials say Revere Dock has been illegally storing 40,000 tons of limestone on its dock for the past six months without a permit. The company is facing a $10,000 fine and 28 citations in all.
Revere Dock currently leases the property to Detroit Bulk Storage, a sand and gravel storage yard business. The riverfront site is the former home of the Revere Copper and Brass Corporation, which once housed an atomic bomb and uranium development in the 1940s and 1950s.
On Nov. 26, a seawall on the property collapsed and sent large piles of aggregate materials spilling into the river. The illegal limestone storage came to light during an investigation into the dock collapse.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency found uranium, lead, several chemicals and heavy metals during testing of water and soil samples after the collapse.
While there may be environmental issues with contamination, Gary Brown, at the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department, said there is no contamination to the city's water system.
