DETROIT (WWJ) - Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan says city buses will be back in service Wednesday after a driver shortage forced a pause in service.
At a news conference Tuesday afternoon, Duggan said rides on Detroit Department of Transportation buses will be free when service resumes March 18 at 3 a.m.
Passengers will enter and exit through the bus' rear doors, and additional cleaning staff will be hired to clean buses following each run, instead at end of shift, Duggan said.
This comes after, early Tuesday morning, the city asked people who depend on the buses to seek other forms of transportation, saying less than 10% of buses were in service.
DDOT then announced said that, due to a driver shortage, no bus service would run on Tuesday.
Meantime, the SMART bus system is also offering free rides. Operators have turned off the fare boxes, the place where most passengers touch, and are now running a fare-free service.
