Despite the fact that Detroit is a hotspot that's frequently mentioned in White House Coronavirus Task Force briefings; hopeful signs are starting to emerge.
Mayor Michael Duggan said during Friday's press conference: "The hospitals are all reporting their bed usage, their ventilator usage is down five or ten percent from just two days ago."
Duggan said multiple hospitals in Detroit are bringing back elective surgeries. He added the TCF Center, meant to be a surge capacity field hospital, has seen only 21 patients. 979 beds remain empty.
"Those 979 empty beds are because the people of the city have taken this so seriously and embraced it the way you did," Duggan said.
Detroit's progress is also making the national spotlight.
Coronavirus Response Coordinator, Dr. Deborah Birx, lauded Mayor Duggan and Detroiters for their hard work and sacrifices to control the spread during Saturday's Coronavirus Task Force Briefing (at 34:45).
"The people of Detroit have done an extraordinary job with their social distancing," Birx said. You can see the graph she showed during her presentation below.
768 new cases were reported in Michigan Saturday. Governor Gretchen Whitmer's "Stay at Home, Stay Safe" Order is in effect through at least April 30.
