(WWJ) The Detroit City Clerk is opening 23 new satellite voting centers, to give voters more options as the presidential election nears.

By making a plan on how and when to vote, city officials say Detroiters are also doing their part to ensure a safe election by reducing lines on Election Day. Detroiters can register to vote absentee and immediately cast their ballot at all satellite voting centers. (Scroll down for details on locations and hours).

Clerk Janice Winfrey says the goal is to ensure that every eligible Detroit voter has a chance to cast a ballot.

"We are excited that you no longer have to wait until the 3rdof November, a Tuesday in November, to vote" Winfrey said. "You can vote on a Friday after work, you can vote on a Saturday in October, or even Sunday with your family before dinner, because we are open seven days a week so that you can exercise your right to vote."

Under a constitutional amendment passed by a vote of 66.8% by Michiganders in 2018, all eligible and registered voters in Michigan can legally vote absentee, in advance, without providing a reason.

Winfrey spoke to WWJ's Vickie Thomas and other reporters at the Northwest Activities Center on Meyers, which is one of the new voting centers opening beginning today, Oct. 5.

She said all 23 locations have a secure dropbox monitored by a camera as well as volunteers.

"We only usually have about seven (satellite centers), but we knew our voters wanted access," Winfrey said. "In additional to the 23 centers, which each has a dropbox in front of it, we have seven additional drop boxes strategically placed throughout the city."
