(WWJ) A woman faces up to life in prison if convicted in a case that has shocked a Downriver community.
Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy announced Thursday that 34-year-old Lisa Marie Reed of Ecorse has been charged with first degree child abuse for allegedly physically abusing her 1-year-old son, Zion Michael Reed.
First responders were called Tuesday morning to the family home in the 3900 block of 7th Street, where they found two small boys with what were described as horrific injuries.
Authorities have since identified the children as 13-month-old Zion Reed and his twin brother, Zyaire Reed.
The boys were taken to a hospital where Zyaire died. Zion, who was in critical condition with facial injuries and broken bones, was still being treated at the hospital as of Thursday.
Officers said they believed the mom's boyfriend was also involved in the abuse. Both were arrested at the scene.
No charges have yet been filed against the boyfriend, whose name has not yet been released, nor in connection with Zyaire Reed's death. Reports say the man has criminal record, including past child abuse.
Prosecutors said no further information about the case was being released as the homicide investigation was still ongoing.
Lisa Reed was arraigned Thursday afternoon in 25th District Court in Ecorse. Bond was denied, and she was remanded into custody in the Wayne County Jail.
The mother will be back in court for a Probable Cause Conference on August 11.
