Freeze Warning Tonight — But There's A Warm-up On The Way To Metro Detroit

(WWJ) It'll be another frigid night in metro Detroit — but could this be the end of the unseasonable cold?

The National Weather Service has issued a Freeze Warning for Southeast Michigan, in effect from midnight Tuesday until 8 a.m. Wednesday.

Forecasters say record-cold temperatures in the mid-20s to around 30 degrees, with conditions right for frost, and a hard freeze possible, mainly along and south of the I-69 corridor.

Metro Detroiters are urged to protect any sensitive plants from the cold by bringing them inside or covering them with sheets. They may die if left outside uncovered overnight. To prevent freezing, and possible bursting of outdoor water pipes, pipes should be wrapped, drained, or allowed to drip slowly. Those that have in-ground sprinkler systems should drain them and cover above- ground pipes to protect them from freezing.

This comes after the NWS says Detroit received another trace of snow last night — the fourth day in a row with at least a trace, which is a record for May. The previous longest was May 1 to 3, back in 1940.  The record daily low temperature, 27 degrees, was set Tuesday morning at Flint, breaking the previous record, 29, set in 1946.

But there is some good news, folks.

Forecasters are calling for warming conditions over the next several of days, as high temperature trend much more on the seasonal side — going up anywhere from 15 to 25 degrees.

High temperatures over the next week will range from the upper 50s up in the 70s. There is some rain and maybe a thunderstorm in the forecast; but Saturday in particular is looking pretty great.
