SHELBY TWP. (WWJ) - Emergency crews have been dealing with a gas leak on 26 Mile Rd. between Hayes and Schoenherr roads in Shelby Township.

As a result, 26 Mile was completely shut down between Hayes and Schoenherr for several hours.

By around 4 p.m. the roadway had partially reopened, with one lane open in each direction and police directing traffic. Drivers were warned to continue to expect slowdowns.

Assistant Fire Chief John McCoy told WWJ Newsradio 950 that a crew digging the basement for a new home accidentally hit a four-inch gas main, early Friday afternoon.

"We've got a gas leak; we've got Consumers (Energy) out there already," McCoy said. "It's probably going to be shut down for a couple of hours at least. It's going to take them awhile to get some crews out there to get it taken care of."

There were no reports of any injuries or evacuations in the area.

Consumers spokesperson Debra Dodd said she's not sure how many gas consumers would be affected.

"We don't have the gas shut off yet; we're working to do that and keep the area safe," she said, at 11:30 a.m. "It does happen to be near a school, but so far the school has turned off its air handlers and has not had to move students out of the school at this time."

Dodd said a utility crew was still working at the scene after 4 p.m.. She said they hoped to have the repair completed by late Friday evening.

Drivers who want to avoid the area can use 25 Mile Rd. or 27 Mile Rd.
