HAMTRAMCK (WWJ) - General Motors is gearing up for a mass layoff.
The automaker says 814 hourly and salaried workers at the Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly Plant will be laid off beginning on February 28.
Of those workers, 753 are UAW members who will either be relocated to other GM facilities or offered buyouts.
The automaker provided notice of the layoffs on Tuesday in a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act filing with the state.
The Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly Plant will be re-tooled to begin producing electric vehicles starting in 2021. Production of the Cadillac CT-6 will wrap up at the facility at the end of next month.
Employees laid off or separated from the company may be eligible to receive unemployment benefits from the state.
