Judge Changes Mind, Denies Bond For Accused Child Rapist

DETROIT (WWJ) - A "Most Wanted" fugitive captured after 11 years on the run will stay in jail while his case proceeds through the courts.

A Wayne County judge on Friday ordered 41-year-old Corey Gaston to be held pending further hearings in the case.

Judge Prentis Edwards said Friday "new information" he'd learned about Gaston led him to rescind the $250,000 cash bond he'd granted Thursday

The bond for the accused child rapist had raised some eyebrows due to Gaston having fled the country after posting bond years ago.

"We are very pleased that today Judge Edwards has re-considered his ruling and has now revoked the bond and remanded the defendant to jail," said Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy.

Gaston was arrested in Mexico last week, more than a decade after he failed to show up for his pre-trial in the abduction and sexual assault of a 10-year-old girl in Detroit.

On June 27, 2007, police said Gaston crawled through a bedroom window of a west side home and abducted the young victim. He took her to a nearby ally where he raped her, according to investigators, threatening to hurt her if she screamed before instructing her to return home.

Police found Gaston's phone and unknown DNA at the scene of the crime. Within days of the attack, a warrant was issued for Gaston's arrest, but he was nowhere to be found.

A U.S. Marshals task force tracked Gaston down in Georgia, and returned him to Michigan in July of 2007. A month later, a judge allowed Gaston to post bond until his February 2008 trial. During that time, investigators were able to positively match a DNA sample given by Gaston to the DNA found at the crime scene.

When his 2008 pretrial date came around, Gaston didn't show up, remaining hidden until tips led authorities to his location, near Guadalajara, on Oct. 2.

Gaston faces charges of first degree home invasion, first degree criminal sexual conduct, second degree criminal sexual conduct and kidnapping.

His next scheduled court date is Oct. 16.
