(WWJ) People in the southern part of Ferndale heard and felt a pair of explosions, late Tuesday morning, after a fire broke out near the railroad tracks.
Ferndale police said a piece of equipment caught fire and exploded at the railroad yard along 8 Mile Rd., in the area of I-75 and Woodward Ave., at around 10:30 a.m. Wednesday
Tipsters called WWJ Newsradio 950 to report thick black smoke in the area, and people working at least six blocks away said they felt the blast.

Ferndale police said there are no hazardous materials involved, and there is no threat to the community. No injuries were reported.
Ferndale firefighters remained on the scene, later in the morning.
The extent of the damage is unclear at this time, and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
