(WWJ) A Detroit man is facing multiple counts of premeditated murder after police say he opened fire into a group at a west side coney island.
Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged 25-year-old Mickey Dane Douglas in connection with the fatal shootings of 34-year-old Brian Jackson, 24-year-old Carnell Watts, and 20-year-old Courtney Willis of Detroit. A fourth person shot, identified as a 28-year-old Detroit man, was the only victim to survive the gunfire.
When Detroit police arrived on the scene at around 11 p.m. Monday, at Eagle's Coney Island on Dexter Ave., they found one man dead outside.
Inside the restaurant, officers discovered the lifeless bodies of two more men, along with the fourth victim who was suffering from a gunshot wounds. The survivor was taken my EMS to a local hospital in critical condition.
The three fatal victims all suffered multiple gunshot wounds, police said, and were pronounced dead at the scene.
An investigation led to the arrest of Douglas, a man Police Chief James Craig said has a "violent past." Calling the shooting "senseless," the chief said video shows there was brief conversation between Douglas and the victims, before Douglas began shooting.
The motive is still unknown.
Douglas has been charged with three counts of First Degree Murder, one count of Assault With Intent to Murder, one count of Felon in Possession of a Firearm and five counts of Felony Firearm. He was arraigned Wednesday in 36th District Court, and remanded to jail without bond.
This incident capped a particularly violent weekend, during which 33 people were shot and seven killed in Detroit.
"The fact that this terrible tragedy happened is yet another reason that we must continue to work towards silencing the violence in Detroit, continue to work with our youth and young adults, and fight even harder to protect the programs designed to help them are not snuffed out even in these difficult economic times," said Worthy, in a statement.
"No dispute, fight, or feud is worth three dead bodies and another fighting for their life. We must uplift the families of these victims and make sure that they receive the justice that they deserve.”
Michigan Department of Corrections records show Douglas has a criminal record, including convictions for armed and unarmed robbery in Wayne and Oakland Counties respectively.
Douglas will be back in court for a Probable Cause Conference scheduled for Aug. 5, followed by a Preliminary Examination is set for Aug. 12, both before Judge Ronald Giles.
