DETROIT (WWJ) -- A Detroit teenager is in serious condition after being shot while walking his dog on the city's west side Wednesday night.
Police say the 16-year-old boy was hospitalized after being shot in the 19200 block of Bentler Streeet, in the area of 7 Mile and Lahser Roads on the city's northwest side.
The shooting stemmed from a dog attack, as a pit bull attempted to attack a German Shepherd that was tied up between two houses, police said. It was not immediately clear how exactly the teen came to be shot, but reports say the dog that was attacked belonged to a 39-year-old man, who was barbecuing in front of his house. At some point, the man allegedly shot the victim, but the circumstances surrounding the shooting remained unclear.
The 16-year-old boy is believed to be the owner of the pit bull, police said. First responders applied a tourniquet to the victim's wounds and he was taken to a hospital, according to reports.
The suspected weapon was recovered by police and the 39-year-old suspect was taken into custody.
Detroit police are still investigating the shooting.
