DETROIT (WWJ) - Authorities are trying to determine the cause of a house fire that claimed the life of a Detroit man on the west side.
The fire took off around 12:45 a.m. Thursday at a home on Monica Street near Elmhurst, between I-96 and Livernois.
"Upon arrival they had a pretty heavy fire," Deputy Fire Commissioner Dave Fornell told WWJ's Zach Clark. "Our people got in there, made a search and we found a 61-year-old male, deceased."
Fornell said the man had second- and third-degree burns over his body.
The fire appears to have been contained to the upper floor, though a cause wasn't immediately clear.
"We don't know exactly what happened, but we're working to find out," said Fornell.
An investigation is ongoing.
