Fed Up Metro Detroit Amazon Driver Quits Mid-shift, Goes Viral

(WWJ) The sentiment: Take this job and shove it.

An Amazon driver quit his job on the spot Monday, ditched his delivery truck at a Southfield gas station, and became internet famous within the hour.

Derick Lancaster's profanity-laden post, at 2:50 p.m. Monday, about the long hours and pay blew on Twitter.

Derick. @_lilderick tweeted: "I quit amazon f— that driving s— i left the van on 12 mile and Southfield y’all can have that bitch and it’s full of gas wit the keys in the IGNITION."

The 22-year-old — who's been with the company for five months, working out of the Hazel Park delivery station — simply got out mid-shift and wandered away from the parked filled with packages, calling a Lyft to pick him up.

By Wednesday afternoon, the viral tweet had amassed 1.1K comments, 26K retweets and a whopping 225.6K likes.

Lancaster said Amazon called him and he confessed that he was the one who'd tweeted. While he admitted his actions were immature and irresponsible, Lancaster said the 12-hour shifts were just too much.

Reaction has been decidedly mixed; some on social media praising Lancaster for "sticking it to Amaozon," others criticizing him for abandoning his truck and packages. A few people even posted screenshots of messaged from Amazon letting them know that their items, which had been previously marked "out for delivery," had been delayed.

A spokesperson for the mammoth online retailer said the company is looking into the incident.

Amazon has faced criticism in recent months as employees across the world complain about alleged mistreatment. A pair of Congresswomen from Michigan in May called for an investigation into working conditions at Amazon fulfillment centers; particularly the company's fulfillment center in Romulus, after reports of an alleged lack of protections in place amid the pandemic.
