(WWJ) Several local hospitals are getting a boost in federal funding to make up for lost revenue due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services is allocating $900 million to health systems in Michigan.
Beaumont Health System is receiving approximately $228 million. Henry Ford Health is slated to get $182.2 million; and Ascension, $187 million.
$108.4 million is allocated to the Detroit Medical Center. That includes Detroit Receiving Hospital, Sinai Grace, and Harper University Hospital.
The distribution takes into account the challenges faced by hospitals treating mostly low-income patients, according to the press release.
The money is from the CARES Act, Paycheck Protection Program and Health Care Enhancement Act.
Many hospital officials say the pandemic has devastated healthcare system budgets because of not having the income from elective surgeries, and a decrease in patients undergoing routine procedures.
In late April, Beaumont laid off nearly 2,500 employees. At least 450 of those job losses are expected to be permanent. Beaumont reported a net income of -278.4 million as of March 31, a decrease of 407.5 million over the same period last year.
Henry Ford furloughed 2,800 employees due to the pandemic during the last week of April. The six-hospital healthcare system reported a net loss of $234.5 million as of March 31, a decrease of 354.9 million over the same period in 2019.
$12 billion will be distributed to hospitals around the country.
