(WWJ) - Here's some news that really stinks for the state of Michigan.

According to a recent analysis, Michigan is the biggest contributor to the American Wasteland and ranks first for the state with the most buried trash per capita. Michigan has the most accumulated “waste in place” per person, with a staggering 62.4 tons of buried waste for every man, woman, and child in the state.

For the study, bigrentz.com consulted the EPA’s Greenhouse Gas Reporting System to determine the amount of waste per capita that exists in or gets transferred to each state.

In addition to being the state with the most buried trash per capita, Michigan ranks second for states that will dump the most new waste per capita in landfills this year -- with 2.27 annual tons of landfill waste accepted per capita.

Michigan also ranks fourth for states with the most amount of landfills, with 42 open and 14 closed landfills. In fact, the analysis found that  0.0079% of Michigan is a landfill. Michigan also leads the nation with the greatest percentage of privatized landfills -- 81.7%.
