(WWJ) Michigan State Police are asking for tips from the public as they try to track down a dog thief.

Troopers from the MSP Monroe Post were called to 14800 N. Telegraph Rd. in Berlin Township on a report a puppy stolen from outside a business, early Tuesday morning.

Investigators say the suspect used a lighter to break the zip ties on the gate and gain access to the 14-week-old Bullmastiff, then taking off with the pup at around 3:15 a.m.

The suspect is described as a white male, approximately 6' tall, with a thin build, police said. He was wearing a black track suit, white shoes and a black hat.

There may be other suspects as well that distracted the other dogs on the property, while the primary suspect took the puppy, according to MSP.

No further information was released as the investigation continues.

Anyone who can identify the suspect, who saw anything suspicious in the area, or who has any information about this theft is asked to call Trooper Kyle Michael at 734-242-3500.
