(WWJ) The Michigan Air National Guard is planning a series of aerial flyovers amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
The 127th Wing Commander announced Thursday that crews and KC-135 and A-10 aircraft from the Michigan Air National Guard at Selfridge Air National Guard Base in Harrison Township will be conducting flyovers in major cities in Michigan.
The purpose, officials say, is to demonstrate the National Guard's continued readiness during the national COVID-19 response, while saluting the Michigan heroes at the forefront in our fight against COVID-19.
"The flyovers are also intended to lift morale in cities across the state due to the severe health and economic impacts that have resulted from COVID-19," according to a media release.
Specific details — including exactly when and over which Michigan cities the flyovers will take place — are not yet known. More information is expected to be released at a news conference scheduled for Monday, May 11.
This comes after a Detroit flyover by the Blue Angels demonstration team to honor health care and other essential workers was canceled due to the weather. While that event was expected to be rescheduled, a new date has not been announced.
