CHELSESA (WWJ) -- A skull left at a Goodwill in Chelsea was turned over to the FBI on Tuesday.

The Chelsea Police Department was initially called about the skull on Jan. 26. It was found within clothing that was donated.

The Washtenaw County Medical Examiner’s office initially took possession of the skull, before sending it to the University of Michigan’s anthropology department.

According to an update from the Chelsea Police Department, the skull is believed to belong to a Black woman between 20 and 49 years old. The skull had traces of “adherent soil” on it, was well-preserved and dry. It didn’t have any signs of trauma, nor was it believed to be used as a medical or teaching specimen.

The FBI will send the skull to its crime lab in Quantico, Virginia, where it will undergo DNA and other testing.

The Chelsea Police says that despite receiving dozens of tips, the person who dropped off the skull hasn’t been identified.

Investigators are looking for a white woman in her late forties or early fifties with shoulder-length brown hair.
