Mother, 4-Year-Old Killed In Detroit Apartment Fire; 7-Year-Old Hospitalized

DETROIT (WWJ) -- A 7-year-old boy is hospitalized after a fire that claimed the lives of his mother and sister at their apartment on Detroit's west side Tuesday night.

Deputy Fire Commissioner Dave Fornell tells WWJ the fire broke out at the family's apartment at 9544 Brace Street -- near Chicago and the Southfield Freeway -- around 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. A preliminary investigation shows the fire started in the stove.

A 32-year-old woman was killed in the fire, along with her 4-year-old daughter.

The boy was taken to a nearby hospital with smoke inhalation, but his condition was not given.

The damage was believed to be contained to the family's apartment.
