Overnight Storms Leave At Least 14,000 Homes And Businesses Without Power

power outage

(WWJ) More than 14,000 homes and businesses in the listening area are without power in the aftermath of Friday evening's storms.

DTE reports 14,174 customers are in the dark, as of 10 a.m. Saturday.

The outages are scattered across Metro Detroit. The hardest hit area is in Commerce Charter Township near Middle Straits Lake, at Commerce Road and Union Lake Rd., where nearly 1,960 outages are listed, according to the outage map on DTE's website.

There are also about 700 homes and businesses out in Farmington in the area bound by Farmington Rd., 14 Mile, Drake Rd. and 13 Mile.

Nearly 1,100 customers are out in Plymouth Township at Beck Rd. at Ann Arbor Trail.

DTE says the estimated restoration time for the Farmington and Plymouth Township outages is by noon Saturday.

The cause of both is listed as "wind damage."

No restoration time has been given for the Commerce outage.

The power company currently has 235 crews in the field.

They are asking you to please stay at least six feet away from crews you see in your neighborhood to protect them and yourself from COVID-19.

DTE says downed wires and branches are a likelihood. If you see a downed wire, DTE says please follow the following safety tips:

"-Stay at least 20 feet away from a downed power line and make sure that you and your family, pets and neighbors don't touch anything it touches – like a fence, or a puddle.

- Be sure to call 911 if there is an emergency.

-Assume all downed power lines are live and dangerous - even if you don't see sparks, smell smoke or hear buzzing. Coming in contact with a downed power line, including touching it with an object – like a broom or pole – can result in serious injuries.

-Do not drive across a downed power line. If a power line falls on your car, stay inside and wait for help.

-Never cross yellow barrier tape surrounding the area of a downed power line."

Please report it to DTE Customer Service at 1 (800) 477-4747, through their website or mobile app.
