Plymouth man charged in attack on mom, standoff with police

(WWJ) A Plymouth man accused of attacking his mother and barricading himself in her apartment is facing multiple felony counts. 

The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office has charged 41-year-old Todd Holgate with assault, resisting arrest and other charges, two days after he allegedly broke into his mother's home in the 390 block of Pinewood Circle


Investigators said Holgate first threatened his 69-year-old mom outside her apartment, Saturday afternoon.

After she went in and locked the door, Holgate allegedly "became irate." Prosecutors say he broke a window to get inside, grabbed a knife and chased his mother into a bedroom.

Holgate is them accused of strangling his mom and stabbing the bed near her head.  

Plymouth police, along with the Western Wayne County Crisis Negotiation Team, responded to the scene and, during negotiations, it's alleged that Holgate threatened to burn down the building. 

Additional officers arrived to set a perimeter and evacuate neighboring units.

After about two hours of negotiations, police were able to talk Holgate out of the apartment Saturday night at around 10 p.m. 

Holgate was taken into custody and was hospitalized for an evaluation.  

He was arraigned Monday afternoo on charges of False Report of a Threat of Terrorism, Assault with Intent to Commit Great Bodily Harm, Assault with Intent to Commit Great Bodily Harm – Strangulation, Felonious Assault and Resisting and Obstructing the Police.

Bond was set at $500,000 or 10% on the conditon that Holgate have no contact with his mother and wear a GPS tether if he is released.

He will be back in court for a Probable Cause Conference on Oct. 9.
