(WWJ) Detroit Police and the FBI were at a Canton cemetery on Tuesday, looking for evidence in unsolved murders.
Authorities say the dig, at Knollwood Memorial Park on Ridge Road, was part of "Operation United," which started in 2019.
As part of the program, evidence tech exhume bodies in order to take DNA samples as they investigate cases involving missing people who may have been victims of homicide.
The cemetery is one place where Wayne County would bury people who died, but who were unable to be identified at the time.
"We have family members with missing loved ones come in an offer DNA samples, and those DNA samples are kept on file in a national database," Michigan State Police Lt. Shaw told WWJ last year. "And what happens is when we find unidentified remains, we're able to collect the DNA from those remains and do a comparison."
While authorities are not releasing information on on specific names or dates in connection with this most recent dig, police have said some of the cases investigated as part of the operation date back several decades.
Anyone who has a missing loved one who has not yet provided a DNA sample to law enforcement is urged to contact the jurisdiction were the person went missing to provide a sample.
