AUBURN HILLS (WWJ) - Auburn Hills police are looking for two people who put a pornographic video up on a billboard along I-75.
According to investigators, the pair broke into a building that houses the computer that operates the billboard, south of M-59, at 10:49 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 28. (Police note that the timestamp on the video is incorrect).
Police said the suspects forced entry into the building, which is also secured by a 6-foot fence. The suspects were caught on security camera inside the building (see screenshot above), where they were able to access a computer, which controls the billboard screen, to play the graphic video.
The suspects were in the building for about 15 minutes before leaving, police said.
Police said the suspects appear to be young white males, both wearing wearing hoodies and glasses. The camera had a night vision function on it, so it is unknown what color clothing they were wearing.
If identified and convicted, the culprits could faces 90 days in jail and/or a $500 fine under an Auburn Hills ordinance that prohibits promoting pornography in public. They also face potential burglary charges for forcing entry into the building, police said, which is a felony offense.
While multiple drivers called 911 to report the porn, police said the graphic video played for about 20 minutes before the owner of the billboard was notified and turned it off.
Auburn Hills Police Lt. Ryan Gagnon told WWJ's Charlie Langton the incident has been drawing interest from far outside of metro Detroit.
"Let's been honest: I've never heard of anything like this happening before," Gagnon said. "We're getting calls from across the country as well as a couple of calls from London, England yesterday."
The suspects remained unidentified as of Tuesday morning.
As the investigation continues, police are asking anyone with information to call them at 248-364-9460.
