Snow Hits Metro Detroit Overnight, Makes For Slick Morning Commute

(WWJ) -- While parts of metro Detroit saw some light snow last week, the first real blast of winter weather of the season moved into southeast Michigan Sunday night, bringing up to 3-5 inches of snow by Monday evening.

Forecasters say that could make for a dicey Monday morning commute in metro Detroit.

AccuWeather meteorologist Dave Bowers, speaking live on WWJ, says a winter storm system will move into the area overnight, followed by a blast of cold weather from Siberia. Forecasters say the temperatures could set records from Texas to New England.

"There's going to be something on the road for the morning rush -- we're calling for 29 degrees, so it is going to take a little salt to keep things moving without bumping into one another," Bowers said.

He says with a high of just 34 degrees, untreated surfaces are expected to be slippery. Low temperatures could dip to as cold as 14 degrees by Tuesday.

Craig Bryson, a spokesperson for the Oakland County Road Commission, says crews will be out in full force to salt the roads ahead of Monday morning's commute.

"We're really kind of just waiting and watching," Bryson told WWJ. "And when those temperatures get down right around the freezing point, if it is raining or even snowing, we'll bring some trucks in and start patrolling the bridges and overpasses."

While Bryson says trucks will be out before rush hour, if the storm continues into the morning commute, that could be a problem.

"Obviously, our trucks can't get through rush hour traffic faster than anybody else," Bryson said.

Bryson says the Road Commission starts preparing the crews and putting them through refresher training in October.

Meanwhile, areas in the the Upper Peninsula could see up to 4-8 inches of snow.

Here's a look at the forecast from the WWJ Weather Team:
