LIVONIA, Mich. (WWJ) -- A car that was stolen in Pontiac, Mich., nearly four decades ago has finally been found.

Livonia police say officers were recently dispatched to an abandoned Chevy Corvette within the city. The 1981 Corvette's vehicle identification number was checked through the Law Enforcement Information Network and it was discovered that it was improper.

Livonia PD's Detective Hall, who specializes in auto theft investigations, determined the vehicle's VIN plate had been modified and after a thorough inspection, Hall was able to determine the Corvette's identification number through a confidential secondary VIN, according to police.

The investigation revealed that the Corvette was reported stolen from Pontiac all the way back in 1981, when it was brand new. Police say the classic car will now be returned to the owner 38 years later.

Authorities did not say where the Corvette was found, and did not identify the original owner.
