(WWJ/AP) A woman is facing murder and other charges in the death of a Michigan State Police trooper, three weeks after a crash in western Michigan.
Trooper Caleb Starr of the Lakeview Post died in the hospital from injuries he sustained in the crash back on July 10.
Police said Starr, 33, was driving on Grand River Avenue in Ionia County's Boston Township, at around 10 p.m. when a vehicle driven by an allegedly drunk Utah woman crossed the center line from the opposite direction and smashed head-on into his patrol car.
Starr was taken by helicopter to Spectrum Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids, where MSP said he died Friday evening.
Trooper Starr graduated from trooper school in spring 2019.
He leaves behind his wife, Rachael, a civilian member of MSP, and their two little daughters.
“The Michigan State Police mourns the loss of not just a trooper, but a husband, father and dedicated public servant who had so much left to give in a life that was cut far too short,” said Col. Joe Gasper, director of the MSP, said in a news release.
The 28-year-old woman, who was hospitalized with injuries following the crash, has been charged with second-degree murder and other offenses related to drinking and driving.
Her has not yet been released, pending an arraignment.
