(WWJ) -- A Wayne County man is dead after stepping out of his vehicle on I-696 and being struck by a car late Saturday night.

Michigan State Police say just before 10:30 p.m. Saturday, they were called to the scene along the eastbound lanes of I-696 near Dequindre for a crash with a possible ejection.

Upon investigating, authorities determined that a 29-year-old man from Westland had stopped his car on the freeway and then exited his vehicle in the traffic lane. A second vehicle could not stop in time and struck the man and his parked car. The second vehicle did stop at the scene.

It was not clear why the man stopped his car or got out of it on the freeway.

Police say it does not appear that alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crash, but the investigation is still ongoing. Autopsy results are still pending and police intend on conducting more interviews regarding the crash.
