SHELBY TWP. (WWJ) - Police are investigating following the death of a pedestrian in Shelby Township.
According to investigators, a woman was trying to cross Hall Road (M-59) near Hayes Road, at around 12:45 a.m. Monday, when she was hit by a silver Toyota Camry.
Lt. Jeff Daniels told WWJ Newsradio 950's Ron Dewey the driver involved stopped at the scene.
"The car was headed westbound," Daniels said. "He (the driver) was cooperative, pulled over right away. In conducting our investigation...alcohol did not appear to be a factor. He cooperated with us, cooperated with our detective bureau and was released on the scene."
Daniels said it appears that the woman was using the crosswalk, but the driver just didn't see her.
"Especially with the lighting issues that you have here," Daniels said. "...It's fairly dark out here."
The victim has been identified as a 50-year-old woman who lived nearby. Police said her family was notified, but her name is being withheld at this time.
Hall Road was closed west of Hayes overnight for the investigation, reopening ahead of the morning commute.
As the investigation continues, any witnesses are asked to call police at 586-731-2121.
