WALLED LAKE (WWJ) - A woman who jumped into an Oakland County lake to rescue a bird then had to be rescued herself.
That's according to the Oakland County Sheriff's Office, which said the incident happened Saturday afternoon on Walled Lake, in the city of Walled Lake.
While on routine patrol, an OCSO Marine Unit was waved over by a boater who said one of his passengers had gone swimming, and was having a hard time staying afloat.
Marie deputies then spotted the 30-year-old Redford Township woman swimming on her back, but lost sight on her several times while she struggled to stay afloat. "Obviously fatigued," officials said, she then began yelling for help.
Marine deputies tossed the woman a flotation device then pulled her in with a rescue rope.
Once safely out of the water, the woman explained to her rescuers that she'd gone in to rescue a small bird that had fallen into the water. The water temperature was unexpectedly very cold, officials said, and fatigue rapidly set in.
The woman refused medical treatment and was returned to the pontoon boat to be with her friends and family.
