OAK PARK (WWJ) - Authorities say a woman jumped from a moving vehicle after the driver refused to pull over for police in the middle of the night.
The incident unfolded around 12:05 a.m. Thursday when Michigan State Police troopers attempted to stop a vehicle for an unspecified traffic violation near the Southfield Freeway and Outer Drive. Police say the vehicle started to slow down, but then a woman jumped out of the car and the driver took off.
Troopers chased after the suspect for about 16 miles to 11 Mile and Greenfield roads in Oak Park. The chase ended after troopers struck the vehicle, causing it to spin out. The driver got out of the car and took off running, but was eventually caught after a short foot pursuit and taken into custody.
While troopers were chasing the driver, Dearborn police responded to the initial scene to check on the woman. She allegedly told police that she jumped out of the vehicle because the driver refused to pull over. She was not injured.
After interviewing the suspect, police determined he was suffering from a mental health issue. He was taken to the hospital for assistance.
