DETROIT (WWJ) - Detroit police have arrested a man who allegedly carjacked and sexually assaulted a woman on the city's west side.

The incident unfolded around 11:40 p.m. Tuesday after the 25-year-old victim and her friend pulled up to a local business. The friend, who was driving, went inside and the victim remained in the car.

While the victim was sitting in the vehicle, police say the suspect approached the car, entered the driver's seat and pointed a weapon at her. He then drove the victim to the area near McNichols Road and Trinity Street, east of Grand River Avenue, and allegedly sexually assaulted her.

After the assault, the suspect exited the vehicle and fled the location on foot.

Putting out photos with a call for tips to help to identified the suspect, police said he was to be  considered to be armed and dangerous.

Detroit Police Chief James Craig detectives acted quickly, showing the suspect's photo around the neighborhood, and the suspect was taken into custody without incident Wednesday night.

Craig said the man had a distinctive look -- including a missing finger -- and was known in the area.

"I'm very excited he's in custody; this brings some closure," Craig told WWJ's Vickie Thomas and other reporters. "And this should be a message to anyone else: We will find you, and we did."

Craig said the man, who has a criminal record, is behind bars awaiting charges. His name is being withheld at this time.
