ROMULUS (WWJ) - A 25-year-old man who was arrested in connection with two shootings on I-94 near Detroit Metro Airport has been released from police custody.

After further investigation and interviews, Michigan State Police determined the man was not responsible for the shootings and he was released without charges.

A search for the suspect continues.

Police were called to eastbound I-94 near I-275 in Romulus around 1 a.m. Monday after a man reported he was shot at by someone inside another car. Several rounds hit the man's vehicle, but he was not injured. The suspect vehicle was described as a silver Pontiac Grand Prix with sparks coming from the right tire area.

On Tuesday, state police responded to the same section of the freeway around 1 a.m. after a man reported his vehicle was shot at several times by a suspect in another vehicle. The man was not struck or injured. The suspect vehicle in the case was described as a dark-colored Pontiac Grand Prix.

Lt. Mike Shaw said although the vehicle descriptions vary slightly -- "some people see color differently" -- investigators believe the two incidents are connected.

"This is the second one, two days in a row. The same suspect vehicle description, the same timeframe, same area," he said. "So while we don't have any actual evidence connecting the two, they are very, very similar and we believe that they are probably connected."

Shaw said drivers who pass through the area should remain vigilant and call police if something doesn't seem right.

"Don't be afraid to contact law enforcement, especially if you see something suspicious in that area with a Pontiac Grand Prix. We definitely want to know about it," he said.

Detectives are continuing to investigate. Anyone with information is asked to contact police at 734-287-5000.
