(WWJ) The busy I-94 corridor sees more than its share of weather-related crashes among semis. All this week, police in four states including Michigan will be cracking down on drivers who are speeding, tailgating, or not paying attention to the road.
State Police Inspector Patrick Morris tells WWJ they need drivers to straighten up and fly right ahead of the snow and the heavier holiday traffic.
Morris explained that because of lake effect snow, conditions quickly become icy on westernmost portions of the freeway.
"It's a good time for us to get out there and have high visibility, slow traffic down," he said.
The I-94 corridor has a lot of pinch points that see a lot of crashes, even during good weather, he added.
During a similar crackdown this summer, Michigan State Police wrote more than 1,000 tickets. At the time, police said crashes involving commercial vehicles have increased 15 percent in the past five years.
Between 2014 and 2018, 86 people were either killed or seriously injured while traveling on I-94 in Jackson, Washtenaw and Wayne counties, police said, hence the fact that corridor was chosen for additional enforcement.
