(WWJ) The coronavirus outbreak is leading Michigan State University to move to online classes starting at noon today because one person linked to the East Lansing campus is being monitored for the illness.
But everything appears to be under control in East Lansing, unlike the University of Dayton where riot police had to get involved after classes were canceled.
The look was mayhem in the wee hours when students took to the streets following the announcement student housing was closing due to coronavirus fears.
About 1,000 angry-sounding students flooded the streets.
Police shot pepper balls into the crowd, and the scene went quiet at about 2:15 a.m., roughly three hours after it started.
One person was injured by a thrown bottle.
The Dayton Daily News reported there was "lots of glass and debris on Lowes Street, as well as police officers."
School officials later said in a statement, "A large disorderly crowd that grew to more than 1,000 people gathered on Lowes Street starting around 11 p.m., throwing objects and bottles in the street and at police, and jumping on cars. Police gave verbal orders to disperse which were ignored. Police initially launched pepper balls, which contain powder with an irritant that disperses quickly, that were unsuccessful in reducing the crowd size. About 2:15 a.m., UD police and additional Dayton police again gave orders to disperse and moved to clear the street, which was effective in dispersing the crowd quickly. At least one person was reportedly injured by a thrown bottle."
"Cancel school to limit exposure, so they gather together and spread it more. odds these brain dead kids will self quarantine at home 0%. Exhibit A why china slowed the spread and we cant. They'd all be dead in China," one man wrote on Twitter.
The fracas came after the school announced housing would close at 6 pm March 11 and "Students should take any items necessary to continue their education from home as well as other essential items in case time away is extended."
