(WWJ) Winter is coming and that means our already-beleaguered roads will take a beating.
One lawmaker has an idea to fix the roads that he will be pitching to a local county commission.
WWJ's Charlie Langton reports that Act 51 from 1951 equally divvies up road funding among the state's cities, counties and townships, no matter how traveled their roads are. Sen Pete Lucido from Macomb County wants to change that formula and base distribution on the needs of roads and not where they happen to be located.
"It's volume of vehicles that are causing the roads to do what they're doing. You get past Bay City and you'll see that everything is smooth. Those highways are gorgeous," Lucido said. "And because they get more money than we do when it's all said and done, that's cheating. And I want the cheating to stop."
Lucido said he plans to discuss his bill proposal later today to the Macomb County Commission.
He added that instead of raising taxes to pay for road repairs, he recommends raising registration fees.
