DETROIT (WWJ) - Saturday may have started off as a beautiful, sunny day in Metro Detroit but now a threat of possible severe storms has arrived.

A Severe Thunderstorm Watch is currently in effect until 6 p.m. Saturday for all of southeast Michigan. A Severe Thunderstorm Warning has also been issued for northeast Macomb, and St. Clair counties until 3:45 p.m.

The National Weather Service says the storm could bring quarter-sized hail, 70 MPH wind gusts and frequent lightning.

Torrential rainfall is occurring with this storm and may lead to localized flooding. Motorists are cautioned NOT to drive vehicles through flooded roadways. Hail damage to vehicles is possible.

High winds will cause unsecured light outdoor objects to be blown around, and scattered tree damage and power outages are possible.

Frequent cloud to ground lightning is also occurring with this storm. Lightning can strike 10 miles away from a thunderstorm. Remember, if you can hear thunder, you are close enough to be struck by lightning. Seek a safe shelter inside a building or vehicle.

This storm may intensify, so be certain to monitor local forecasts for additional information and possible warnings from the National Weather Service.
