State Health Department Launches Condom Delivery Service During Coronavirus

One state is providing an extra service to make sure its residents have all the protective aids they need.

Amidst fears about people not staying as safe as they should during the coronavirus pandemic, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services has launched a new condom delivery service.

In the mood for love, but can't get out to the pharmacy? It'll come to you.

The state of Michigan's health department has set up an email inbox anyone can use to request free condoms and lube delivered to the door. Participants will receive 10 condoms and individual packets of lubricant. The state promises condoms are mailed discreetly and anonymously, with no logos or labels on the padded envelope.

"We were really kind of glad to see the state come out with this program," Calhoun County Public Health Department Choices Clinic Nurse Practitioner Michelle Thorne told "This has been kind of an ongoing issue since we got into this stay-at-home order."

The service is aimed at helping people stay protected against unintended pregnancies, sexually transmitted infections, and HIV during the COVID-19 pandemic. The announcement of Michigan's door delivery of condoms comes as public health officials say they're concerned about a spike in STDs while people are unable to seek routine medical care.

“When the dust settles on coronavirus, we’re going to find out about all the public health issues that we haven’t been able to pay attention to, and how big of a problem they’ve gotten as they’ve kind of been under the radar,” Adriane Casalotti, chief of government and public affairs at the National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO), told The Verge.

As access to healthcare dwindles during a pandemic, the CDC's latest statistics show that syphilis, gonorrhea, and chlamydia reached an all-time high in the United States in 2018.

There were more than 115,000 syphilis cases, the highest number reported since 1991; Gonorrhea increased 5 percent to more than 580,000 cases – also the highest number reported since 1991; and Chlamydia increased 3 percent to more than 1.7 million cases – the most ever reported to CDC.

To get free condoms in Michigan delivered to the door, email the state's health department HERE and they'll arrive, no questions asked.
