YORK TWP., Mich. (WWJ) - A young girl is dead, and members of her family are hospitalized, after a crash along US 23, south of Ann Arbor.
According to Michigan State Police, 9-year-old Maka Muya, from Columbus, Ohio, was in a Honda Pilot that had slowed down on the freeway due to a mechanical issue. The vehicle was hit from behind around 11:30 p.m. Wednesday, in Washtenaw County's York Township, causing it to go off the road and roll over.
The girl, who police said was not wearing a seatbelt, was partially ejected from the SUV, which then landed on top of her.
Eight other people in the SUV were taken to the U of M Medical Center and Children's Hospital. A spokesman for Huron Valley Ambulance told MLive that all of them were in stable condition, and many were transported as a precaution.
As an investigation continues, police drugs and alcohol were not believed to be factors in the crash.
U.S. 23 was closed for several hours, into the early morning, but has since reopened.
State police said the family was living in Ohio, but was originally from Kenya.
