DETROIT (WWJ) - A 16-year-old Detroit boy appeared in juvenile court on Wednesday, accused of impregnating a young girl.
The charge comes two days after police said the 13-year-old victim, who didn't know she was pregnant, gave birth in the bathroom of her family's west side Detroit home .
Firefighters arrived at the home on Edinborough, in the area of 7 Mile Rd. and Evergreen, around 4:30 p.m. Monday after the girl's younger sister called 911 to report a baby was being born in a toilet, according to authorities. The newborn was unresponsive on the bathroom floor when crews arrived, with his young mother lying nearby unconscious.
Firefighters and EMS treated both at the scene, reviving the baby, and transported them to a local hospital for treatment. Officials said the baby was expected to be OK.
The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office says it's alleged that the 16-year-old defendant had sexual contact with 13-year-old girl several times since July 2018.
The teen was charged as a juvenile with one count of Criminal Sexual Conduct - Person 13-15 years old. At a preliminary hearing he was granted a $5,000, 10 percent bond on the condition that, if released, he have no contact with the victim, or any other minor child under the age of 16, unless under the direct supervision of an adult.
An investigation is ongoing. No names have been released.
