WARREN (WWJ) - A Warren teen has been bound over for trial on a charge of first degree premeditated murder in the death of her high school classmate.
Tanaya Lewis was 17 years old on September 18, 2018, when prosecutors say she stabbed 16-year-old Danyna Gibson to death at Warren Fitzgerald High School.
Witnesses testified that Lewis, armed with a straight-edge kitchen knife she'd brought from home, was smiling and laughing while chasing the victim around a classroom -- stabbing her twice in the back as she tried to flee, and again after she fell to the floor.
Gibson died at the scene. Lewis was arrested and charged as an adult.
Making the case for first degree murder -- a charge which requires that a killing was planned in advance -- Macomb County Prosecutor Bill Cataldo noted that witnesses testified Lewis screamed: "I'm going to kill her... I want to kill her."
According to Warren Police Commissioner William Dwyer, the girls were both straight-A students; and the stabbing stemmed from a love triangle involving a boy at the school.
Lewis will remain held without bond awaiting her next court appearance, set for March 18.
