(WWJ) The deep freeze that struck metro Detroit this week -- followed by what's expected to be a rapid increase in temperature to nearly 50 degrees -- is already wreaking havoc.

The 36th District Court in downtown Detroit is flooded and so is Oakland University's library.

In Detroit, court administrators say a pipe broke causing extensive damage and flooding to the entire main floor.  The metal detectors, other security devices and courtrooms were also impacted.

Restoration workers will work around the clock and through the weekend to clean up the water and make sure the building is safe to open Monday.

At OU, WWJ's Charlie Langton found this scene of destruction following a burst water pipe.

To help prevent burst pipes, experts recommend letting water drip, opening any cabinetry around pipes to let the heat in, and keeping the thermostat consistent.
