(WWJ) Grosse Pointe schools are investigating after a video surfaced of two young girls screaming the 'N word' at each other during an altercation.
As one walks away from the fight, the other says she's "her slave."
Grosse Pointe Schools Supt. Gary Niehaus said he learned of the video over the weekend and forwarded it to the district's human resources department and to Grosse Pointe South High School principal Moussa Hamka.
Niehaus told WWJ the students and their parents met with Hamka. The parents, who were disappointed, were seeking to solve the problem between the two girls.
While the incident happened off school grounds, Niehaus said the girls face discipline related to the extracurricular code, which sets rules for behavior of athletes and others. Niehaus told WWJ both students are athletes, and it's unclear if they'll be retuning next year.
In the meantime, a letter was sent to parents offering support over the summer; Another letter will go out today to students. There will also be diversity training opportunities over the summer.
"A lot of this we have to work on this summer and then we also have to work on what would happen if they're back in the fall," Niehaus said.
WATCH THE VIDEO BELOW IF YOU CAN STAND IT, BUT KNOW IT INCLUDES NUMEROUS USES OF THE N WORD. It will auto play on mute.
This isn't the first time school officials have had to make a discipline decision related to racism. Four Grosse Pointe students were suspended in 2016 for painting the 'N-word' on their stomachs at a party and posting it on Instagram.
These incidents have some wondering about the culture throughout the school system. Grosse Pointe residents are 90.2% white and 2.61% black compared to its nearest neighbor Detroit, which is 83% black.
"If racial slurs are exposed on an almost yearly basis in #GrossePointe public schools, maybe the entire culture of the city needs to be examined. These kids are not acting in a vacuum. They are learning and modeling bigotry from somewhere," Mike Radtke tweeted.
