Dash cam video shows the suspect driving in the wrong direction between lanes of oncoming traffic. At one point she pulls over on the freeway, then speeding along side streets into a construction zone at 7 Mile near Livernois where she crashes into a truck, crumbling the hood.
"The fact that nobody was injured or killed we're so thankful for, and it's a miracle almost," Ferndale Sgt. Baron Brown told WWJ Newsradio 950.
Brown said the car was left running, as is protocol, on July 5 in a parking spot outside Como's on Woodward as an officer was dealing with a situation.
"A bystander yelled: 'Hey! She just got into your car!' The officer turned to look, and his car was driving away," Brown said. "You know, the car contains a lot of equipment and a couple of rifles and we couldn't allow access to those, so there was about a 10 to 15-minute pursuit and she ended up crashing at 7 Mile and Stoepel."
Hawkins was was arrested at the scene and arraigned in 43rd District Court July 6. She remains held on a $250,000 cash bond, no 10%, in the Oakland County Jail.
