(WWJ) A Western Michigan University student, Bassey Offiong, has died from coronavirus, Kalamazoo health officials announced.

The 25-year-old Detroit resident was expected to graduate in chemical engineering just a few weeks from now. He reportedly had no underlying health conditions.

Statistics abound showing coronavirus is most deadly for the oldest among us, but several recent cases in Michigan drive home the point that no one is immune. A 38-year-old Detroit police dispatcher died last week; This morning a 44-year-old state representive died of suspected coronavirus.

And now a student.

"I was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of one of our students, Bassey Offiong." Edward Montgomery, president of Western Michigan University said in a press release. "Bassey was a young man of enormous potential who was scheduled to graduate with his degree in chemical engineering in just a few weeks. On behalf of the entire Bronco community I want to extend my deepest condolences to his entire family, including his sister Asari, who has been generous in communicating with us regularly. They are in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

Three WMU students have tested positive for the coronavirus, officials added. The university's classrooms and dorms were closed two weeks ago on the cusp of Gretchen Whitmer's shelter in place order, which shut down all public schools, bars, restaurants, most offices, and other public spaces.

The Kalamazoo County Health & Community Services Department also released this statement saying, "We are truly saddened to learn of the death of a Western Michigan University student due to COVID-19. Our thoughts are with the student’s family and WMU as they grieve the loss of a loved one. We know this student was not a Kalamazoo County resident; however, this virus has no borders when it comes to who it affects and how it is spread... Stay home and, if you must go out for essential items, stay safe by taking preventative measures.”
