MACOMB TWP. (WWJ) - Officials and residents in a Macomb County neighborhood have just one question to ask: Who keeps pooping in the pool?
In more than one instance recently, human waste has been left behind in the Buckingham Woods community pool on Crusader Drive, off 23 Mile Road east of Romeo Plank Road in Macomb Township.
"Someone has been defecating in the pool," the Buckingham Recreation Facilities Association said in a letter to residents. "Due to the frequency over the past week, we believe this is intentional. At the present time, we are reviewing attendance logs and recorded video."
The pool was closed for several days while it was drained, cleaned and sanitized. It has since reopened and now a second attendant will be present at all times -- but at a cost.
"Unfortunately, these closures are costing the recreational association money and downtime for our members," the letter said. "Due to the additional costs related to the 2nd attendant, we have opted to cancel the annual carnival."
Zack, who lives in the subdivision, said neighborhood kids are "devastated" the carnival has been canceled.
"It's like an epidemic. This is the third or fourth time this has happened in a short span this summer," he said. "At first, it's kind of funny; you think of a Caddyshack moment. But then it's like wow, this is actually ruining some of these kids' summer. It's costing everybody money and it's unfortunate."
Zack said he feels a little uneasy that the mysterious pool pooper remains at large because the perp is likely one of his neighbors.
"The pool is supposed to be for residents. What they do is they make sure that when you come to the pool that you are part of the subdivision -- there's three subdivisions that are allowed to use the pool," he said. "So you give them your lot number and there's somebody there that watches who comes in."
As the investigation continues, the association is considering taking possible legal action.
"We are consulting with the local authorities regarding our options," the letter said.
Police have been informed of the situation.
