(WWJ) -- It's been said "a dog is man's best friend." But some of those friends have more bite than bark.
Every year, the City of Detroit receives thousands of complaints about dogs. On any given day, up to 220 animals are being housed by Detroit's Animal Care and Control.
Recently, the city council strengthened its dangerous dogs ordinance after a nine-year-old girl was mauled to death last year.
"If animal control knocks on the door and is there investigating a dangerous dog complaint, it requires owners to respond within 48 hours and if not, it mandates additional follow-up and the officers can go to 36th District Court and get a seizure order," new Animal Care and Control Director Mark Kumpf said.
This week on In Depth from WWJ, host Rob St. Mary takes a look at dangerous dogs in the city an interview with Kumpf and help from WWJ City Beat Reporter Vickie Thomas.
